Flagellant

After an experienced volunteer scores his back with shards of glass embedded on a wooden block, a Filipino flagellant scourges himself with a rope tipped with small wooden sticks designed to hit the small wounds on his back. He walks around town barefooted under the scorching summer heat. Believers do this to ask forgiveness for their past sins or ask favors from God. This is an annual ritual in Barangay Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines.
